Doubts, honesties, passions,
and sometimes deep insecurities
riddle these moments.
It’s getting less clear day by day
who I am and what I want.

Joan walks here with me,
a younger trusting spirit
deep springs of wisdom and feeling
in her eyes.

I’m so scarred by so much
that I’ve seen and done.
Sometimes, as I hold her, I wonder
if I’m looking for shelter
from the storm in her love.

And I look at her then and think
that she’s eager to embark
on life’s journey’s
while I’ve just stumbled back
weary and worn.

Like hands across time,
these moments and books.
Sometime back then a book was given me:

‘Things I meant to say to you when we were old’

There was a particular feeling in that moment,
our lives, our love of feelings, our problems
all permeated that moment
and then time moved on.

Now, so many years later, I sit
in front of my books and see
hidden there
one given in love,
one read in pain,
small messages half heard then
and lost in the sweep and flow
of all that happened afterwards.

But tonight, in front of these books,
I remember and feel
those moments and feelings
and they are so remote
and yet so present.

The books are here, and the moments gone.
