Most of my life is easy…distractions— Copyright 1965-2008 by Dennis Gallagher —
friends, peers, equals, sounding boards
those I’m defining myself with
and against.
But it gets harder when we press against
those unlike us in years or spirit;
our teenagers and preschoolers
and those we have to work with.
And yet how much of my energy do I spend
on the easy ground
and how sparsely do I meditate
on my sons and their growth.

Monday, October 29th, 1984 I listened like a pool of water
steady reflection without ripples.
She said she knew I felt superior to her
and yet she felt protective of me.
that, in spite of my strength and intelligence,
there was something in me that she wanted
to mother and protect.

of our agings and experiences
mourning patience against the morning light
Warm smiles that have seen much
shared stories of families and our lives.
The flicker of low fires against the wind.
Honesties and compassion
realisms and understandings
born of the child’s long passage
thru the others and our years
no longer preparing to conquer the world
but still deeply pressed into living it.
