1987-06-25 #4 – Somewhere, the missiles

Monday, April 17th, 2023

We’re singing
with the kindergarten school teachers.
And the Moscow trees and sunlight outside
are all profoundly different
and yet so much the same.

From the top to the bottom,
they are organized and coordinated.

And from face to face
they are open and loving.

Now we are singing a Russian song and
now we sing an American one.

And outside the sunlight and trees
are the same.

But somewhere … somewhere outside,
are the missiles.

The voices flow like Russian water,
peace winding in the air,
hearts are flying softly.

I’m here, halfway around the world,
and strangers are singing to me
of peace and love.

Here, where the Hammer and Scythe
lives; that so scared my father.

If I can find some way
to put my finger on the pulse
of such magic,
then God give me the wisdom.

How could any system that could
produce or allow such talent
to flower be wrong?

We dance to the tune
of thoughtless consumption
on the stage of Capitalism
while they dance, poorer perhaps,
on a stage that
cherishes the future.
